LONG TERM CARE

Long Term Care is care resulting from the inability to care for yourself because of prolonged ilness or disability.  Assistance may be needed on a temporary or permanent basis for performing daily activities, such as bathing, dressing or eating.  It may be care provided in an assisted Living Facility, an Adult Day Care Center or Hospice; or it can be nursing care in a Nursing Home, an extended Care Facility, or at home.

YOU MAY NEED LONG TERM CARE SERVICES IF YOU HAVE:

*An illness or injury and you are not able to perform two or more activities of daily living at home

*An unexpected accident causing a nursing home stay for senility or Alzheimer's Disease

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES THAT YOU WILL NEED LONG TERM CARE?

The US General Accounting Office (April 1995) reported that in 1994, 7.2 million senior Americans reported they they required some form of Long Term Care.  Estimates are that with the aging of the population that figure is likely to double in the next 25 years.

HIAA (1997) reported that 48.6% of all Americans 65 and over require care in a convalescent/nursing home sometime during their lifetime.  In addition, studies show that 71.8% of elderly Americans require care in a home care setting at some time in their lives.
